Ebook About
Named one of the top health and wellness books for 2016 by MindBodyGreenDepression is not a disease. It is a symptom.Recent years have seen a shocking increase in antidepressant use the world over, with 1 in 4 women starting their day with medication. These drugs have steadily become the panacea for everything from grief, irritability, panic attacks, to insomnia, PMS, and stress.  But the truth is, what women really need can’t be found at a pharmacy.According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, antidepressants not only overpromise and underdeliver, but their use may permanently disable the body’s self-healing potential. We need a new paradigm: The best way to heal the mind is to heal the whole body.In this groundbreaking, science-based and holistic approach, Dr. Brogan shatters the mythology conventional medicine has built around the causes and treatment of depression. Based on her expert interpretation of published medical findings, combined with years of experience from her clinical practice, Dr. Brogan illuminates the true cause of depression: it is not simply a chemical imbalance, but a lifestyle crisis that demands a reset. It is a signal that the interconnected systems in the body are out of balance – from blood sugar, to gut health, to thyroid function– and inflammation is at the root.A Mind of Your Own offers an achievable, step-by-step 30-day action plan—including powerful dietary interventions, targeted nutrient support, detoxification, sleep, and stress reframing techniques—women can use to heal their bodies, alleviate inflammation, and feel like themselves again without a single prescription.Bold, brave, and revolutionary, A Mind of Your Own takes readers on a journey of self-empowerment for radical transformation that goes far beyond symptom relief.

Book A Mind of Your Own: The Truth About Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives Review :

Brogan's "shocking" truth about depression is to rule out any underlying physiological causes, eat well, exercise, meditation, yoga, nutrition and walah! Cured! (eye roll) It's a purely biophysical approach that says eat well, live well, and medications are all bad mmmkay? It doesn't talk about coping with trauma, abuse, grief or loss, and actually trivializes them in favor of a purely physiological model as though diet and exercise will somehow magically make your real life problems and pain go away. I did find it rather amusing, I lie, I found it hysterical, that there's an entire section dedicated to telling a depressed person to get sleep, with complete disregard for depressives that do nothing BUT sleep. Next, a section dedicated to exercise ….patronizing at this point. The last section on lifestyle should just suggest plain old yoga, plain and simple. However, she specifically recommends Kundalini Yoga, basically just because she personally likes it. She claims on the Joe Rogan podcast that it "literally rewired my entire nervous system and now I don't feel stress about anything." Seems fantastical, fluffy, and new agey enough, but for the laymen; let me explain what this very ancient, spiritual practice that westerners have made trendy, entails. "Yogis believe that when the Kundalini awakens, the door of the Sushumna (an energy conduit) is opened and the Kundalini ascends through the six chakras (alleged energy centers) until it reaches the crown chakra at the top of the head. When it reaches this height, it unites with Lord Shiva (the god of destruction) whose consort is Shakti. This union supposedly brings about the joy of “Blissful Beatitude.” There is also what's called Kundalini syndrome. Awakened Kundalini energy can cause a spiritual crises. Symptoms are ...Ding Ding Ding ...Depression, hallucinations, breaking with reality, depersonalization, and a variety of other physical symptoms. Clearly, our dear Doctor here is wayyyy out of her field of expertise and knowledge to be recommending ancient spiritual practices and wording them as new age fluff. My last point is the adamant anti-serotonin theory that serotonin plays no role in depression. Clearly our "woke" Dr. missed all the research on psychedelics like psilocybin, ayahuasca etc.. and their powerful effects on serotonin, alleviating depression, and neuroplasticity. Then again, she's not concerned so much about healing emotional trauma and she badly wants to throw that pesky serotonin theory out the window. Dr. Brogan says that depression is just a side effect for an underlying physical condition like inflammation or leaky gut. I can assure you that depression is very real, complex, condition and those suffering from dysthymia, chronic persistent depression, or severe debilitating depression will place this book on the heap with all the other "miracle cure" books that didn't work. Interesting to see hat she's extorting folks and putting that money to good use such as artificially inflating high reviews and sending flying monkeys at negative reviews.
I got this book and followed Dr. Brogan's instructions because I wanted to take a "natural approach" to treating depression and anxiety symptoms. I stopped taking the "nasty little pill" (birth control) and slowly tapered off my antidepressant. I followed the diet, did the kundalini yoga, and meditated according to protocol. Where did it land me? In the worst, most debilitating, most excruciating suicidal depression of my adult life. I stuck with the protocol for months and months, hoping it would finally "work," but I only got worse. Luckily I have a wonderful family who supported me through this nightmare. At the urging of my fantastic family physician, I finally went back on the antidepressant. At first I felt like a failure, but within 6 weeks, the depression lifted and I had my life back again. It's been two years back on my antidepressant (I also exercise regularly, eat well, and meditate daily) and I've never felt better. I now accept that while a "natural" approach may work for some, it doesn't work for all. I think that it is irresponsible for Dr. Brogan to suggest that all pharmaceuticals are bad- they gave me my life back!
