Book The Big Book of Small Python Projects: 81 Easy Practice Programs Review :

I've taught Python programming to students in Middle and High School. In my opinion, after someone has learned the basics of the language, this book would be a terrific follow-on. Indeed, aggressive beginners might even start with this book, because the author provides such a thorough introduction to setting up the programming/learning environment. For teachers, there are 80+ individual examples, each of which could serve as a basis for a day or two of class-time instruction. For those that are teaching themselves, which is likely the majority of readers, an unusual feature of the book is the set of instructions given at the beginning, detailing a consistent approach that can be used by the reader for each example - to extract the maximum benefit. If you do what the author suggests, you WILL learn and understand each example! The examples includes lots of games and other entertaining projects. The demonstrated programming concepts cover a broad range, from fairly simple, to quite sophisticated. Anyone that takes the time to consistently apply the principles outlined for using these examples will learn a great deal, efficiently - and have fun while doing it. I predict that in the end readers will be surprised (and impressed) with just how much they have grown in their programming ability. I really like this approach to learning, and I think you will too!
Al's new book is a great exercise in forcing a developer to think differently about their approach to coding. In my experience, developers tend to "stick to what they know" and persist unhealthy design patterns or anti-patterns that have worked for them in the past. What I found valuable in this book was to see the challenge, or goal of a toy application and think about how I would code it. Then look at the design patterns Al chose, and see how my approach compares with another way of achieving the same thing. It sounds like a wasted effort, but in reality it has drastically improved my design patterns for my real-world developer job.My kids are finally at the age where they can start to learn code - and the fun approach Al took with his "toy apps" made them really enjoyable for my kids to follow along and work through. The games were especially a hit - tic tac toe, sodoku, and the card games were great examples of physical games that you could code and understand.Overall I would highly recommend this book for advanced developers and beginners alike. Understanding new design patterns and different approaches makes this book worthwhile for anyone interested in improving their python coding skills.
